Ultrasound Shows Dancers What’s Going On

Real-time ultrasound has been a very useful tool for medicine and athletes in general. Doctors have now used it to identify the causes of snapping hip syndrome; an anomaly that is annoying, but painless and not disabling.

Many people with physically active lifestyles (like a ballerina) experience a painless snapping and/or popping of the hip that other people can hear. In fact, most Americans have experienced this when standing up, or moving in a way that the hip pops, at some time during their life. In a recent study, 26 dancers were examined by a doctor and a physical therapist, both, to study this strange popping. Ultrasound enables the doctor to view the hip while the ultrasound wand moves across the area. Half of them reported the hip snapping began as early as 12-14 years old.

Modern Medicine Technology Shows Us What’s Happening

Anomalous jerky movements of the iliopsoas tendon and the iliotibial band (IBT) were of special interest, in that these tendons help to flex or bend the hip. The ITB is a band that stretches from the hip to the knee on the outside of each leg.

Ultrasound showed that the tendon rolling over the bone caused the anomaly in 2/3 of the dancers tested. At times, the tendon rolled over the bone and got stuck in the muscle, causing minor pain. The only way to relieve the pain is to pop the hip on purpose by moving the leg, returning the ligament to it’s original place.

The ultrasound technique wasn’t able to determine the cause of the snapping in the last 1/3 of the dancers, and it still isn’t clear whether the snapping causes damage to the hip over time. It isn’t painful or disabling, but it’s reported to be annoying to the dancers. Future studies over a period of years are necessary to see what happens to the hips if they do nothing now.
